Study Abroad Peer Advisors
After my first study abroad program, I returned to Gainesville feeling like an entirely new person, and I wanted to stay connected with UF's international community. In the spring of 2022, I became a Study Abroad Peer Advisor (SAPA), which changed my college experience for the better.
The Study Abroad Peer Advisors are a group of students who have all studied abroad and want to encourage others to do the same. I invite you to explore our mission, members, and more!
What We Do
Outreach
Outreach events are designed to encourage students to study abroad, as well as answer questions about the application process and what life abroad is like.
My favorite outreach event is always the study abroad fair. Students are so energetic and excited to come learn about all of the program options, as well as hear about our experiences in those countries. I always lose track of time answering questions, and I often leave with a sore throat from having so many great conversations!
We also partner with other student organizations to create more targeted presentations, such as focusing on pre-health programs or studying abroad as a first-gen student. I love speaking on engineering-specific panels because engineering students often believe that they have limited study abroad options. I am always excited to share that I completed two separate study abroad programs that earned credit for my engineering degree because it helps students understand that it is a possibility for them.
Scholarships
As SAPAs, we are passionate about helping other students study abroad in any way we can. One of the biggest barriers to studying abroad is the cost that comes with it, which is why we give away thousands of dollars in scholarships every semester.
The scholarship ceremony is the most exciting time of year because we get to present future study abroad students with their scholarships. Seeing the direct impact that our fundraising has on the international community is fulfilling and brings me so much joy! I especially love when students will study abroad using our scholarships, then return to UF and share their incredible experiences with us!
Community
Although I love participating in outreach events and giving away study abroad scholarships, by far the best part of being a SAPA is the community. Our shared passion for travel allows us to create deep and meaningful connections with each other, as well as engage in thoughtful conversations about cultural differences.
From my first SAPA meeting in the spring of 2022, I knew that this was a special organization full of the most kindhearted, open-minded people. I felt so passionately about this community that I ran for President of the organization in the spring of 2023, and serving on the executive board has been the highlight of my college experience.
Inside and outside of SAPA events, I feel supported and empowered by my fellow SAPAs, and being part of this organization has given me confidence, leadership skills, and friends that will last me a lifetime. I truly could not be more grateful for this support network that has carried me throughout college, and I know that I would not be where I am today without them.
